Coronavirus - update 15/05

We would like to say thankyou to all our clients that have needed to visit us over the past few weeks. It has been a very different and slightly strange experience having to conduct most of the work in the car park or in the phone and the pets having to come inside on their own. It is quite surprising how readily most of them come trotting through the door on their own! We have also been operating on greatly reduced staffing numbers and getting to the phone has been a challenge, so we would like to thank you for your patience on that score also.

Following the government's announcement on Sunday we have been waiting for an update from our professional body as to how we are allowed to proceed. Currently this is still under review and as such nothing is changing at the moment. We have a few more staff in at work now but are still nowhere near our full quota. We would appreciate it if you could try and ring during the weekdays and before 1pm if possible due to the number of staff we have available to answer the telephone. After 3pm we are more limited again but we are still here if we don't manage to answer please keep trying!

Those of you that have visited will notice we are having some extensive renovation done on one end of the building. In one sense it is not an ideal time to be undertaking major projects but it was planned some time ago but at least the disruption is at at a time when it has less effect on our day to day life. This is to create a new isolation area and two large walk in dog kennels, along with an upgrade of our laundry facilities. All will be revealed in due course!

Coronavirus - Vaccinations & Neutering

Vaccinations

We are now able to undertake vaccinations in dogs, cats and rabbits under certain circumstances.

Puppies and kittens:

We are able to give new puppy and kitten vaccinations to ensure they receive protection

Booster vaccinations:

In order to remain consistent with the government’s policy we are delaying any booster vaccinations in dogs and cats for three months to reduce the amount of contact for clients and ourselves. The previous vaccinations they have received will give them adequate protection during this period.

Should you have a pet that has already gone outside this three month period and are either not able, or do not wish, to come to the surgery at this time we will provide the second vaccination that will be required free of charge, when the general restrictions are lifted. In the vast majority of pets the immunity provided by these vaccinations will last much longer that this three month period so don’t worry if you are not able to get to the surgery.

Rabbits:

We would recommend any rabbits that are due vaccinations be vaccinated as the immunity provided by the vaccination is less short lived and the summer months are the time of most risk

We are now able to undertake castration and spaying where it is essential. There must be “a justifiable welfare reason to carry out the procedure, especially considering the use of PPE and oxygen that comes with it”

This can be in a number of circumstances:

If there are male and female pets in the same household

If you are unable to keep your cat indoors

If there are any other detrimental effects of not neutering (eg aggression between rabbits)

We would ask that you think carefully whether it is important at this time before requesting neutering for your pet. We will discuss the situation with you and come to

There is also an option of chemical castration of male dogs that is also available which requires administration of an implant and lasts 6 or 12 months. We are happy to discuss this if you are interested.
